I grew up hating America

I grew up hating America. I cringed when I heard the actors speak in movies.

Today, in the “rabbit hole” of the Monday Morning Memo, I was lead to Paul Harvey, a famous radio broadcaster. I listened to a couple of his audios, and that searing, deep hate came back.

So I am sitting here and contemplating.

The hate reaction was instantaneous, but what to think… that needs to be cogitated, contemplated, in silence, without taking sides.

I look if it is the content and yes and no… so it is not the content. It is the audio.

The radio style copied by many, including Roy Williams of the Monday Morning Memo.

So what? you could ask, and yes, I need to dig deeper to see why I am so put off by that style.

Here are three things, all three significant, I think:

1. The attitude that produces the sound, the Radio voice 1 is the puffed up, I am sure, I know, listen to me, I am infallible, and unthinking. I know the truth, and I’ll tell you.

The delusional I. The overconfident I. The inauthentic I.

The thing Mark Twain talks about: It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. Mark Twain

And The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent full of doubt. 2

Radio voice makes everyone sound like the stupid ones that are sure, cocksure.

Now, mind you, they may not be, but that is radio voice for you.

2. The second thing is more significant, and more up our alley… i.e. relevant to becoming a human being.

The voices sound just as cocksure as the radio voice.

Pontificating.

Now, I admit, that hearing the original voices that you personalize, or react to with marker feelings, is not easy. It takes practice. And it takes knowing that there is an original voice…

For example when in 1997, maybe 1988, I first decided to hear what the voice was saying that resulted in me not doing what I knew I had to do in my business at the time…

I lied down and covered my head with a pillow. I wanted to drown out every other input.

And I heard the voice say, in radio voice: “You can’t do it”

All previous times I thought I heard myself say: “I can’t do it.” But what the VOICE said was: “you can’t do it.”.

And my emotional response: resignation, was a response to that, what the voice said.

Once I heard the voice’s rendition of that statement, I could do a Socratic inquiry… meaning: I could ask questions.

I asked: what makes you so sure? are you a psychic? do you see the future? or did you just make that up?

And thus freed up, I could do what the voice claimed I could not do.

3. The third reason I probably hate the radio voice is this: on some level I hear that I myself sound cocksure. I have utterances. I speak like an oracle…

Why? It is probably my soul correction asserting itself: I must sound sure.

But truth be told, my whole lifestyle, my whole approach to life is the opposite: I experiment, I test, I dig deeper, and I go and see what I can see… all the way towards more of the truth…

This doesn’t come through my voice. And I hate that about my voice…

I probably do the whole dance and song of using off-color words, of making fun of myself, etc. to counter the cocksure voice… And it’s work…

OK, now, where does this contemplating leave me?

Surprisingly it leaves me with the gap between my voice and my real intention. I have some work to do, that I definitely don’t know how to do. lol… Did that make me sound stupid or intelligent… lol.

Experimentation is play. Role playing. Doing something and see what happens.

This quote explains the discrepancy between how different people are sure or unsure…

“It seems the more evolved an animal is, the more time it spends playing.”-P.J. O’Rourke

Somehow the voices encourage being sure and discourage keeping things fluid so you can play and experiment.

All of your starting point measurement numbers are the way they are because of these voices… Your vibration, your overall intelligence, etc.

Play is a reflection of courage… to swim away from your safe island… your precious I of self image, and see what the world is like, but more importantly, maybe, see what you are made of…

Play is the secret sauce that allows you to develop and access your adult capacities… No play, no wisdom. No play, no fun. No play, no life worth living.

I did sound like an oracle… But I spoke from my own personal experience. I did a course, twice, in 1996 and in 2003, that uses play as the main tool of transformation. 5% of the participants were willing to play. The rest remained the way they had been: miserable. And safe?

These are your starting point measurements I give you for $15. And for a dollar added, you can even talk to me. For a whole 20 minutes. But you need to have some courage, because talking to me may change you….

20. Recommendations:

  1. What is a radio voice?
People who work in broadcasting want to develop their voice for TV or radio so that they sound professional the minute they first speak into a microphone. … Vocal training means sounding less like an announcer and more like your natural self when the TV or radio microphone is turned on.
  2. Have you ever been absolutely certain about a fact and later determined that you were completely wrong? If you learn from that experience you become less arrogant and more empathic. I wish more people would achieve this form of personal growth. Here are three versions of a relevant saying:

The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.

    yeah…

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

    and a third one…

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent full of doubt.

This thought has been linked to the Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet W. B. Yeats, the prominent British philosopher Bertrand Russell, and the notable American writer Charles Bukowski.
