Develop your Awareness, your conscious awareness

the awareness we are talking about in this article is self-awarenessAwareness 1 , when it is in the context of raising your vibration, is an inner awareness, awareness of what lies below the surface, maybe even several layers deep. But to develop awareness, we need to start real close to the surface, and maybe even outside of it… a little bit. 2

Awareness of your insides is developed through practices in focusing your attention on the details of your emotional responses and your attitudes. You can’t learn anything about yourself, your insides, from others, or from a book: you can only be guided where to look, how to look, but what you will see is what you will see… no telling.

Depending on your current awareness, which is, for most people, is very low, and depending on your level of courage to face things you don’t like about yourself, you will see more or less.

When you read a book you are focusing your attention on the concepts and ideas, but in reality, there are no concepts, and there are no ideas. All that is mental process, mind process, and won’t help you to awareness.

When your are reading, from the mind, your awareness is sleeping. You cannot direct it to your behavior, your emotions, your attitudes. You are in your mind, and at “best” you imagine progress, which we’ll call “the illusion of progress.

Learning anything worth learning, even a language, is learned through your kinesthetic faculty, the body, the sensations, the movements, the emotions.

learning-to-dancetoddler-on-bikeLearning to be aware is a lot like learning to dance, learning to ride the bicycle, learning to swim. It is very clear when you succeeded: there is suddenly no struggle, there is suddenly a grace and ease that wasn’t even possible to imagine before.

When you are learning to dance you have to be aware of how and where your feet move, your hands and body motion, what your partner is doing, music, beat, floor space, and other dancers.

As you can see, awareness cannot be learned from books and the salsa can’t be learned from a book either. Why? Because awareness cannot be taught with words.

It’s really the most alike to riding the bicycle: there is this moment of “aha, that!” when you first experience balance. Then, everything after that is, instead of groping in the dark, doing this, doing that, is a duality: it is either balance or it isn’t balance.

In learning awareness there is the same kind of aha moment, just as dramatic, just as amazing, as when one first finds balance on a bicycle.

In the awareness exercise I have “prescribed” to you a few days ago, 3 the goal was that things come to focus. Focus is a lot like balance… it’s either there or it isn’t.

In my years of study and working with clients I have seen that causing self-awareness is very very very difficult.

Most people I know are not aware of their inner world. They live in a certain illusion that they can learn more, read more books, buy more courses, self-assessment programs, and in the end, they will know themselves.

But in the moment: they are not aware. They are not aware of themselves, they are not aware how who they are in the moment wreaks havoc in their world.

living-in-the-presentBeingness is an inner phenomenon. Until you are clearly aware of who you are being in any given moment, you are not aware enough to be called aware or conscious.

The way to become aware is a process, a long process… I am not going to tell you that someone can give you a remedy, or an activator, and by magic you’ll become aware.

No, the process happens through self-imposed exercises, where different types of awareness, different targets of awareness, different modes of awareness are experimented with.

Most of those are purely kinesthetic, and some of them are auditory or visual. None of them are mental.

Memory, using your mind, is a definite hindrance to becoming aware.

When you become more self aware you instinctively begin to see aspects of your personality and behavior that you didn’t notice before.

Now, here is an important aspect of awareness, that I didn’t say in the beginning, because you will “get” it better now, that you need it.

Awareness is non-judgmental, non-evaluative. Awareness comes from your Observer or Witness… the part of you that never sleeps, and never judges. Awareness notices what is, and doesn’t call it right or wrong… but surprisingly, awareness often causes subtle changes, the sum total of those is a complete overhaul of who you are.

Which means, learning awareness does not have a hidden agenda to force you to change.

Change will come by itself… or if it is forces, it will not come at all.

  1. Awareness is the ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects, thoughts, emotions, or sensory patterns. In this level of consciousness, sense data can be confirmed by an observer without necessarily implying understanding. More broadly, it is the state or quality of being aware of something. In biological psychology, awareness is defined as a human’s or an animal’s perception and cognitive reaction to a condition or event. according to Wikipedia
  2. situational awarenessThis means, that when we talk about awareness, we don’t talk about situational awareness, we won’t mean awareness of beings or entities
  3. I’ll repeat it here for you: The exercise I have devised for you to start activating your body’s intelligence, your body’s faculties is an exercise you’ll need to do 100 times a day, but at least twice an hour.

You need to use the body, your posture, your energies (all body!) your attention (body again!) your eyes (body again) to get back into the present moment, eyes open, to get present to what is in front of you: your computer screen, your cup of tea, the traffic in front of your car, the sky, the television, the book you are reading. Physically. Don’t worry about your thoughts: your thoughts will do whatever your thoughts will do, we’ll won’t worry about them.

As long as your eyes are focused, your body is alert and aware, your posture is erect, your breathing is deep and slow, we’ll call that being present.
You see, this is not a thought exercise: you actually have to do it.

We’ll call this the getting present meditation, 20 times a day, a minute or two. I can do it is 30 seconds, but today with all the website crashes it’s taken me 3-4 minutes each time: yeah, I am still doing it.
