Living Dangerously: The habits that keep you feeling safe, small, bankrupt, and feeling dead UPDATED

detective-with-search-glassI had a one-on-one session with a student yesterday.

Sometimes I notice something “out”… something that doesn’t fit the picture, and just like a good detective, I latch onto it, and watch it, and if I can, I use it to unravel the mystery someone’s life is.

But sometimes it takes a while to really identify what it is that doesn’t fit… it is just a hunch, it is just a feeling… like the faint scent of death for a search dog…

What is the deepest, below the water level reason for your procrastination?

have to do todayIf you watched me long enough, you would probably swear that I am a procrastinator. I plan to do things, maybe I even write it down, maybe I even schedule it, and then I don’t do it for a long time, maybe ever.

I don’t consider myself a procrastinator: you need to have a should to be a procrastinator. By definition, procrastination is not doing what you should be doing. I have no shoulds, even if I said I would do something, it doesn’t live like a should for me.

I do things when I do them, and when I don’t do them, I look at them with curiosity, interested to see something about them, but that’s all. First distinction: Tree of Knowledge.

Tree of Knowledge is a personal phenomenon: if you heard it, learned from another, and it wasn’t your personal experience, any knowledge is Tree of Knowledge. This doesn’t mean it is not true, it only means that you don’t know that. Your mind accepted it as true, but it will not influence how you are, because there was no learning process, training process.

Second distinction: Your invented purpose in life

I invented a purpose for my life some 20 years ago, in a seminar called Integrity.

The process they used was unique, maybe a little off the wall, but it worked really well for me.

The assignment was: observe your life and locate a recurring event or phenomenon that you really can’t stand. Turned it on its head and make a purpose of it for your life.

Some people are continually disappointed that all their efforts don’t produce results and no matter how much they effort, how right they are, how perfectly they do what they do, they tend to end up empty handed.

Others are givers. Give advice, give favors, but somehow no one appreciates them and they are lonely and miserable in the end.

Yet another may go along, unsuspecting, and always crash and burn…
